There are many things to consider when choosing one right cheap laptop piece for you. We should take an informed choice when buying our next laptop computer.

Notebooks come in all sizes and shapes with a variety of features to suit almost any task. Before we begin searching the internet for the lowest priced machine on the market, it is a good idea to think how it will be used because choosing the right one very much depends on its intended use.

Compile a list of features in order of preferences i.e.

1) must haves

2) would likes

3) bonus features

Now you are ready to search within your budget for ideal cheap notebook. For example, Tim is a web developer, he spend lots of time playing with code, w4e use graphics packages to design sites and text editors to code them. Users of cheap laptops will have lot many problems. Most of the users buy cheap laptops get lesser GB drive than the originally stated GB. Where has the missing space gone for which amount was paid?

The answer to this question is perhaps that the operating system reports the capacity of the hard drive using the assumption that l MB is equal to 1,048,576 bytes. This is technically correct. But the hardware manufacturers compute the size a bit differently. They consider 1 MB to be equal to 1,000,000 bytes.

Therefore, we can see how this can cause confusion. If the drive is advertised as 20.00 GB i.e. 20,000,000,000 bytes, the operating system will see it as approximately 19.07 GB (20,000,000,0000 / 1,048m576 / 1000 = 19.07). The full 20,000,000,000 bytes are really there. Courtesy to them.

Laptop prices now start at a very lesser price. While reviewers cite a number of catches to bottom of the line notebook computers, you can get a fully functional laptop for less amounts. If your notebook will supplement a desktop PC or you need no applications more demanding than word processing, web browsing, or mail, a cheap notebook works just as well as one that costs twice as much.

But of course if you want to get some combination of better build quality, a longer warranty, an easier-on the eyes display, longer battery life, gaming capability and lighter weight you have to spend more.

Dissecting A Smart Battery – Part 1

Smart Batteries – they are used in PDAs, MP3s, MP4s, Laptops, Cell Phones, Smartphones, DVD players, and other electronic devices. When we buy new batteries we want them to work. We really don’t care how they work just as long as the do. But since PDA Batteries are a unique interest for me and since pda batteries are smart batteries I’m going to dig a little deeper to discover what lies within PDA batteries. So follow along as I disect a pda battery to learn what it is made of!

Contained within a smart battery is specialized hardware. Hardware that has a specific purpose: to deliver calculated and on demand current as well as predicted information.

This specialized hardware includes:

1. the connector
2. the fuse
3. the charge and discharge FETs
4. the cell pack
5. the sense resistor (RSENSE)
6. the primary and secondary protection ICs
7. the fuel-gauge IC
8. the thermistor
9. the pc board
10. the EEPROM
11. the SMBus

But what are each of these components and what do they do? Let’s find out?

The connector is a device that joins electric circuits together. Most battery packs require more than one connector. The main battery connector is both the mechanical and electrical part that interfaces the battery to the PDA or other electronic device. If you have ever installed a battery in your PDA then you probably have plugged your battery in by plugging/snapping in the main battery connector to the device’s PC board. Features that have to be considered when selecting a connector of a particular battery is operating temperature (range/limits) since high capacity batteries discharge excessive heat – having a connector that can withstand such temperature extremes will prevent a short circuit.

Connectors also have to proper pin assignments so that current and performance capacity can be met and short-circuit thresholds are predetermined. Pin orientation within the connector has to be designed in order to fit the device. If it doesn’t well you won’t be able to connect the battery to the PDA or other electronic device. Finally the connectors has to be handle time-varying current therefore the ratio of the phasor voltage across the element to the phasor current through the element (otherwise known as impedance) has to be preset or else expect connector to not function in the way it was supposed to!

In the next article of this series I will cover the smart battery’s fuse, charge and discharge FETs , the cell pack, and the sense resistor (RSENSE). The article after the next will cover the primary and secondary protection ICs, the fuel-gauge IC, the thermistor, the pc board, the EEPROM, and the SMBus.

Laptop LCD Screen Removal - Easy Step By Step Instructions

When the LCD panel in a laptop gets cracked, there is not much more that you can do about it other than simply replacing it. The cost for the LCD panel itself will likely be fairly expensive. The process involved will be only slightly different between laptop makes and models, so these step by step instructions will apply to the vast majority of laptops.

Before you ever work on any of the hardware inside a laptop computer, always make sure the laptop is not connected to any power source and that the battery has been removed. Have you have ever noticed the little rubber dots along the plastic edge, bezel, of your laptop screen? Those are actually screw hole covers. Start by carefully removing these with the edge of a very fine flat head screw driver and set them aside. You could also use any fine pointed tool or the tip of a small knife. You can now access and remove the bezel screws.

Once the screws have been removed you can remove the actual bezel itself. This can be tricky because these need to be snapped out, and it often can make you think that you are pulling too hard on the bezel. It is usually best to start at the upper edge along the display screen until one corner has snapped out, and then work your way around the edge unsnapping the bezel as you go.

Once the bezel has been removed you will want to remove the very tiny screws along the frame of the LCD panel. These secure the LCD panel to the rest of the laptop. Once this has been done you will be able to lay the screen down and unplug the video cable. The video cable is a wide flat cable that will be around one to two and half inches wide or so. Many times this cable will have a piece of yellow tape over it.

Next you can remove the inverter cable. This usually has two wires connecting to a plastic end piece which clips into the inverter. There is usually one pink wire, and one white wire. The inverter itself is an elongated, narrow circuit board contained within a clear plastic cover. There may be a screw in the inverter will have to be removed in order to unplug the wires.

Some models may require the removal of hinge screws. If your laptop has built in wireless capability there will be an addition wire to remove from the back of the screen when you are removing the video cable.

When removing these parts and screws during this process, it is a good idea to set them aside in an organized fashion that will allow you to work your way backwards through these steps when it comes time to install the replacement LCD screen. Always be extra careful when handling the new replacement laptop LCD panel as these are easily scratched during the installation process.

4 Tech Must - Haves For Your Mobile Office

Everything changes when you trade in your desktop for a laptop and your office for a hotel room.

Sometimes this is for the better: You're liberated from your cubicle and free to go where your work takes you.

But sometimes things change for the worse. Productivity suffers when you're in an unfamiliar place. The way a laptop keyboard cramps your hands is sometimes enough to keep you from getting the job done right.

Here are four technology "must-haves" for the mobile office, plus some tools that can boost your productivity while you're away.

* The Right Small Business Software

It isn't just downloading the necessary applications onto your laptop or PDA, it's also knowing whether the programs are suited to a mobile office. Is your email program built for the road or adapted from a bigger application meant for a corporate network? Do the programs work together on your laptop or do they freeze when your processor gets busy?

These considerations can become big issues when you're travelling. That's something Tab Stone, a doctor from Los Angeles, knows all too well. He installed a new email program on his laptop before leaving on a recent trip, but it wasn't suited for mobile use. He had to uninstall it shortly before takeoff, but that disabled his backup email program. That meant he couldn't download any messages to his PC. "I could not fix whatever was corrupted with either a fresh download or a copy downloaded from the internet," Stone recalls.

The latest: Contact-management software programs let you integrate data with your PDA, so you can download and synchronise contacts, calendar appointments and notes to your Palm Pilot or Pocket PC. There's also a web-based version for travellers who either lose their laptops or prefer to work from a desktop at their destination.

What's next? Look for more integration between applications for wireless users. Contact managers are already assuming the role of email program, address book and database. The next step is making it more accessible to people who are using cell phones or PDAs.

* The Right Hardware

I'm not talking about owning the newest laptop computer. I'm talking about hardware that's created for life on the road. Let's face it: A lot of the gadgets on which mobile professionals depend aren't made with travellers in mind. For example, when Joachim Martin's laptop battery ran out on a recent flight, a helpful flight attendant offered to recharge it in a "secret" outlet in the back of the plane. "The batteries charged," remembers the software developer. "But when I got home, they were dead." The power source had to be replaced. Blame the airline, the battery manufacturer or even the unfortunate business traveller for not knowing better, but this kind of thing happens often. Phone plugs don't always fit; neither do power outlets. And a lot of the gadgets we rely on are traveller-hostile, impractical or both.

The latest: Some hardware manufacturers are meeting the demand for traveller-friendly hardware with add-ons such as the Stowaway XT Keyboard. I've also been impressed with Microsoft's Mini Optical Mouse, which frees you from the restrictions of your laptop's finger-cramping pointer.

What's next? As the convergence between cell phones, PCs and PDAs continues, it wouldn't surprise me to see devices that offer the ergonomic comfort of a desktop with the portability of a PDA. It won't come a moment too soon for many road warriors.

* The Right Connections

Connections are everything to the mobile office.

Remember Stone, the doctor without email? He eventually accessed his messages through an unwieldy web connection. Spencer Field, who recently returned from a trip to Melbourne, can also tell you about email trouble. He learned upon arrival that the dial-up numbers to his internet service provider (ISP) didn't work. "I thought that was probably the end of my online access," he says. "As a last-ditch effort, I let my fingers do the walking and checked out the Melbourne Yellow Pages for a local ISP." He found one and signed up for a one-month email account which gave him access to local numbers on his entire itinerary.

It isn't just internet connections that matter, but also hooking up to other devices such as cell phones, PDAs and laptops. Technologies such as Bluetooth let you communicate with other devices in an office or hotel room without the need for cables.

The latest: According to a recent AT&T study, the top barrier to working from a remote location is access to a high-speed data connection. Fast wireless networks are springing up everywhere - in hotels, airport lounges and coffee shops. And even though Bluetooth got off to a slow start, the concept behind it - which is to lose the wires - is fundamentally sound.

What's next? It won't be long before Wi-Fi is as ubiquitous as cellular coverage and a majority of devices are Bluetooth-enabled. That's good news for those of us who work in a mobile office.

* The Right Web Applications

Web-based applications are so important to the mobile office that I've decided to give them their own category, even though they technically belong in the "software" section. The web is one of the most efficient ways for a mobile worker to gain access to a back-office system, intranet or database.

My ISP offers a rudimentary application that lets me check my email from the web. I can't remember how often I've had to use it because my email program failed to work properly. But I do remember the last time. I was stuck at a meeting out-of-town and my email account had sustained a spam attack - thousands of unsolicited messages - that would have taken hours to download. Instead, I logged on to the web and deleted them all in seconds. Were it not for the web application, I would probably still be downloading the spam.

The latest: One of the most innovative Web applications is GoToMyPC , which lets you access the desktop in your home or office through the web. Another useful application for mobile users is web conferencing services such as Microsoft Office Live Meeting.

What's next? Expect these applications to become cheaper, more reliable and even more sophisticated.

• Start every trip with a synch Making sure your PDA and PC are both up-to-date is pretty easy. Generally, you just slip the handheld into its cradle and the computer does the rest. Synchronising one PC with another isn't as straightforward. I've tested every conceivable tool, including the one that came with my computer operating system, and they can be tricky. But it's definitely worth learning, because once you leave the office, I guarantee you'll be glad you updated your laptop.

• Don't trust your computer Memory sticks that plug into your laptop are essential to the integrity of your data. And with some units now carrying up to 5 gigabytes of data (which equates to an awful lot of documents), you can fit all your essential files onto one small stick. Andrew Steele, a media consultant to charities and non-profits in Great Britain, routinely does a double backup. It recently saved his trip. "I had a laptop power supply fail," Steele recalls. "So even when the battery was finally exhausted, I could carry on without embarrassment on borrowed computers."

• Stay in touch with the office There are several useful applications that let you connect to your computer or network from afar, including Microsoft's own Remote Desktop Connection. I like these options because you can catch up on any information that you may have forgotten to synch up before you left. My biggest gripe with these programs is that they tend to be slow — particularly with a dial-up connection — making large data downloads impractical. But if you couldn't synch up before your trip, they can be a real lifesaver.

• Collect information — and back it up Normally, small business travellers are good at collecting business cards, sales leads and receipts. But this valuable information doesn't always make it back to the office. My record keeping was so inadequate when I started travelling on business that I missed numerous charge-card payments. I ended up losing money because I couldn't get reimbursed.

• When in doubt, switch to paper This is obvious advice, but it's so obvious that we sometimes forget it's an option. We've become so dependent on our technology that we don't remember that we could just write the information down. My partner used to make fun of me when I printed out the names and addresses of people before leaving on a business trip. Why do that when everything was on the computer? Well, there are still some things paper can do that a PC can't. Like operate without batteries. So when my laptop ran out of juice and I switched to paper, I didn't look like a fool.

Last week, I wrote about the introduction of low power Atom processors by Intel. The new family - which initially is aimed at mobile Internet devices (MIDs) but clearly is part of the company's overall road map - is an important step in reducing power consumption on mobile devices.

The amount of juice a device consumes is a looming problem: The increasing demand for power threatens to outstrip the devices' ability to provide it. Luckily, there are multiple responses - some quite innovative - to the challenge. More efficient processors, such as Atom, is one. Another is better power management on devices. A third response is more careful operator use. Fourth - and perhaps the most promising - is more potent power sources.

More power can be provided by better batteries, nascent fuel cell technology or a combination of the two. A recent interesting CNET piece is based on an interview with Peng Lim, the president and CEO of MTI Micro. The story says that the company's methanol fuel cells are instantaneously rechargeable, though it doesn't compare the run time of a fuel cell to the type of lithium ion battery commonly used in mobile devices. The sense is, however, that it is greater and growing.

He says that during 2008, MTI will gear up manufacturing capacity and offer products next year. The story describes how the technology, which seems greener than batteries, works. Indications are that the initial products will be aimed at professional-level cameras and cell phones.

MTI, of course, is far from the only company researching power cells. Last week, Antig Technology received certification for its H2PowerChip Stack from Underwriters Laboratories. The company said it will unveil its line of method fuel cells at a trade show in Germany later this month and that it is working with companies who expect to release products based on the technology this year.

Indeed, the great interest in this market is clearly shown in this listing of companies that are expected to attend a conference focusing on small fuel cells for commercial and military applications. The promo says that more than 100 companies are set to attend the meeting, which is set for Atlanta from April 30 to May 2. There will be a pre-conference symposium on creating synergies between lithium ion batteries and fuel cells.

There isn't too much meat in this Drexel University press release that details research being done by Professor Yossef Eladb, but it is worth a look for two reasons. The first is that it offers an accessible description of how direct methanol fuel cells work. The idea is to mix fuel and air to create electricity, heat and water. The release also says that a fuel cell operating at 20 percent capacity doubles the power density of lithium-ion batteries. The fact is intriguing and worth noting. It would be helpful, however, if the release offered context such as the current state of the art in fuel cell efficiency - is the 20 percent capacity the norm? - and described the difficulties involved in improving that efficiency.

Adequately powering portable devices is a major challenge, simply because failure will have severe ramifications for the entire mobile sector. The good news - and there seems to be plenty of it - is that an army of researchers is attacking the problem from a number of directions. This suggests that adequate solutions will be found.

I need to disclose upfront that I'm not highly technologically advanced. I know what basic features that I need in a product and I am pretty good about researching and finding them for the best price. My son insisted that he needed a sleek, lightweight, fast running dependable laptop on which he could surf the web, download music and games, do his homework, email, IM and take notes.

I insisted that although I was willing to oblige him this request, I could not justify spending more than a couple hundred dollars (or less hopefully) on a laptop that he might lose or break in no time at all. After spending hours researching cheap dependable laptop and notebook computers on the web, what I came up with was the Dell Latitude C610 model. We both could agree on this model because it suited both of our needs.

The Latitude C610 is sleek and very lightweight (under six pounds) and the battery last a whopping full four and one half (4 1/2) hours on one charge. (Even my new, expensive laptop can't compare there). The Latitude has an Intel Pentium III 750 MHz processor with 256 MB memory. This makes it a pretty quick machine. The keyboard is roomy but very quiet. The unit includes both a pointing stick and a touchpad, which is pretty rare in this class of computer. This little laptop surfs the web very quickly and doesn't get bogged down or slow even though he downloads tons of music and games on it. It has a CD drive for his games also.

The best part about the laptop to me was that it us well under $200. I got a model with a few extras for about $185. It's a really nice laptop which I often use on business trips because it is so portable. My son thinks it's the bomb and doesn't like the lend it out.

Worst comes to the worst just search for "power socket repairs" on your favourite search engine, there are plenty of independent laptop repair companies that will glady resolder a new socket for a lot less.

Going back to the slightly loose socket that when you wiggle the plug you can make it work scenario, let's take a moment to have a look at what's happening here. The fact that it works when the socket is in a specific position tells us that the break in the solder connection is now connected, and when in another position it's disconnected, so what happens when we move it around, well each time we make the connection by wiggling, we cause a spark to arc across the break, which in turn causes heat to build up and a certain amount of burning to occur. Eventually what will happen is that the arcing will cause a hole to be burnt in the systemboard where the solder join is and one day it just won't turn on anymore and the likelyhood is that it will then need the systemboard replacing. The moral here is get it looked at and put right sooner rather than later.

Before we look at the laptops most suitable for college students, we should understand what makes a good student laptop. Typically, a student would want a laptop that's lightweight and comfortable enough to lug to and from their various classes. In addition, the laptop has to have great battery life and performance. After considering the types of laptops suitable for college students, I've decided to split them into three categories: budget, thin and light and ultraportable. So let's take a look at them now ...

2. Budget Laptops
For a college student who is short on cash, a budget laptop is a good buy. Some of the best budget laptops include those from Dell, Toshiba and HP. I personally find the Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747 to be a great budget laptop. You get an AMD based dual core CPU, which perfroms very well with most applications. You also get a huge 200GB hard drive and a large number of peripheral ports.

There's also a nice Sony VGN-NR160E/S model that is (surprisingly) within the budget category. Out of the box, this machine gives you the Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, 1 GB of RAM and a large 160GB hard drive - that's a lot of computing power at budget price.

3. Thin and Light Laptops
If you prefer a more powerful laptop and don't mind a little bit of weight, then try going for a thin and light laptop. Some of the models I can think of include those from Lenovo, HP and Sony.

The Sony VAIO VGN-FZ280E is a pretty good choice for a thin and light notebook. This system comes with a Bluray compatible writer that can also burn CDs and DVDs. You also get an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz CPU, 2GB RAM and a very large 250GB hard drive.

Another model I'd consider is the HP Pavilion dv6675us. You will get an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz CPU, 4GB RAM and 250GB of hard drive space. The 4GB of RAM is a great feature which will come in handy if you're a student of finance or science and need to run intensive computational applications.

4. Ultraportable Laptops
If the size and weight of the laptop is of high importance to you, then go for an ultraportable laptop. These laptops give very good computing performance in a very small, compact package.

In this category, I think the Lenovo ThinkPad X61 is a great choice for students. It is slightly pricey (but not outrageously so) but it is one of the best performing laptops around. It weighs only about 3 pounds and is hence an extremely portable piece of hardware. You also get an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz CPU, 2GB RAM and an ample 100GB hard drive. You don't get a built-in DVD writer though - that unit is external to the laptop.

Another good choice is the Toshiba Portege R500-S5001X. It weights 2.4 pounds and is less than an inch thick. This is one of the thinnest and lightest notebooks you will find in the market. It's also very reasonably priced.

The best notebook computers are tools that meet your own needs without unneeded features or expenses. So begin at the beginning.

First, you need to consider your budget. The best laptop computer for a college student is unlikely to be in the same price range as a machine that a graphics designer needs. Most people probably overestimate their needs and end up either paying too much or paying for the wrong features. Before you start narrowing things down, settle on your budget. A college student probably doesn't need to spend a small fortune on top of their other expenses. You should also be sure you truly need a laptop and, if so, whether it will be your only machine. If most of your work will be done on a desk top machine and you only need a laptop when traveling, you should be able to keep your costs down. But, if it's going to be the machine you do everything on, you will likely have to spend more.

The only real advantage to a notebook computer is that they are portable. They are more expensive than desktop systems to begin with and they are also harder (and more expensive) to repair or upgrade. For a college student they can be essential if you need to carry one to class and take it with you on vacations or trips home. If you work in multiple locations without desktop systems in each, you also need a laptop. If you travel and need a computer on your trips, you sure don't want to lug a desktop with you. Weight can be an issue to consider if you plan to do a lot of carrying. But there can be a trade-off - lightweight often means a smaller screen and keyboard and shorter battery life.

In terms of budget you do have some choices you may not have thought of that can reduce your cost or get you more machine than you expected. Discontinued models, older models, and factory reconditioned notebook computers are often available at substantial discounts. Last year's best notebook computers are often this year's best deal. If you do look at reconditioned machines make sure they were reconditioned by the manufacturer and come with the same warranty a new machine has. I've used the same factory reconditioned notebook daily for close to 5 years - it was an incredibly good deal so keep the possibility in mind.

Now you need to analyze what you are going to use your laptop for: will you be doing a lot of intensive data applications or graphics applications; do you need it to play high end games; will you be using in places or in ways that may require a ruggedized system; will you just be primarily writing documents, using the internet and doing email; do you need wireless connectivity; what external devices might you connect and what kind of connectors do they need; do you need to be able to write DVDs/CDs or just read them. You may also want to consider whether how the laptop looks is important. That may seem superficial, but under certain circumstances such as high level business meetings, style could be an important feature of your best laptop computer.

The more complex and intense the applications are that you will be using, the faster a CPU and the more RAM and hard disk space you may need. Operating systems and programs are using more and more CPU, memory and disk space all the time so this is not a trivial issue. These days I'd suggest that a minimum configuration should include at least a 1.5 GHz CPU, 1 Gigabyte of RAM and a 60 Gigabyte disk drive. A DVD/CD reader is a minimum and most people will probably want the ability to also write DVDs and CDs.

Before you actually start looking, use paper and a pen, go over your needs and requirements and write them down. Essentially you want to create a checklist to compare to the features of models that interest you. Once you get started, keep your budget firmly in mind. Often you'll find the best price for your personal best laptop computer online. If you can, before you actually buy, find the same model in an offline store and check the screen size, the keyboard and how the weight feels to you. Weight may be less important but you may also be carrying other accessories. The screen and keyboard are critical components for comfortably using your computer. Don't settle for a screen that's too small or a keyboard that feels cheap or clumsy. Take the time and put in the effort to make sure you end up with the model that suits you best.

A small laptop, also known as a notebook computer, (or simply a notebook) is a small-sized personal computer. A laptop typically weighs from one to three kilograms depending on size and other factors.

The Zonbu runs on a proprietary operating system and is manufactured by Everex. You get a 1.5GHz C7-M VIA processor, you also get a less than spectacular 512MB of RAM, however the beauty of Zonbu is less about the hardware, and more about the service they offer.

Basically, the notebook comes loaded with 20 software apps, such as the aforementioned OS, firewall, and virus protection, all of which the company will upgrade automatically and for free.

Zonbu also provides its users with automatic data backup on an online storage site, and remote access to those files via the Zonbu computer or any other computer. If the Zonbu hardware should break, the service gets you a free replacement of that laptop. In fact, the company claims it will send out your new laptop the day you report your system failure. And all of your files will be backed up, remember, so no worries there either.

The cost for such a product-$479 down and $14.95 per month afterward with no commitment. If you commit to their service for one year, the down payment goes down to $379. Commit to two years, and you save another hundred-with a down payment of $279. Break the commitment, and you could be looking at up to $200 in charges.

(In comparison, the Zonbu Desktop Mini-where the company got its start-comes at a down payment of $99 with a two-year commitment.)

That's all well and good, but Zonbu claim to fame is its greenness. The 5.3lbs (2.4kg) laptop produced by Everex is designed to earn the Green Electronics Council's EPEAT silver rating. It is also Energy Star 4, and meets RoHS standards. For an idea of what this means, let's again compare with the Desktop Mini. It uses just one-tenth the energy of a regular desktop, thanks in part to it not containing a fan or hard drive. Also the laptop's low power design reduces CO2 emissions, and is totally carbon neutral, and consumes far less energy than used by a typical light bulb.

And when (hopefully after years of sterling service) Zonbu gives you the green screen of death, the company offer a free take-back program to recycle your used laptop responsibly. E-waste is quickly becoming a global concern. Millions of tons of electronic waste is dumped in landfills and incinerators every year. Simply return your Zonbu laptop and they will settle the tab for safely recycling all the components. They'll even recycle the original box it came in! And the 60GB hard drive that comes with the laptop? Everything is stored on flash memory and backed up on the company's servers via the Internet.

The whole deal sounds zerific, right? But here's something to ask Zonbu if you decide to give them a call: What privacy guarantees do they make that they won't access your stored files on their server, or let someone else?
